The Challenge
We all remember the water crisis in South Africa in 2017, which was reported on nearly every news channel. Between 2015 and 2017 South Africa’s winter rainfall zone saw its most severe 3-year drought in more than a century of rainfall records.
In some of the cities in the Southern part of the country the government restricted water usage to a limited volume per person per day. After this tough lesson, it was quite evident that dramatic action must be taken to prevent recurrence in the future. The city of Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) on the Algoa bay in eastern cape took this step forward!
The Solution
The DELTA full modulation controller was installed on Oct 2022 in Nerina Road , PE (Port Elizabeth).
The DELTA controls a 6”-720 valve on the inlet of DMA (District Metering Area), adjusting the supply pressure to the area in proportion to the varying demand/flow rate.
This battery-operated cloud-based controller allows the water utility remote control of the PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve) and the monitoring of the system behavior. This allows the system’s owner to make educated decisions based on real-time measurements. Additionally, the controller enables the modification of settings to enhance the system’s efficiency and minimize water losses.
What’s in it for the customer?
The impact was clear and immediate. Just by reducing the pressure from 4.0 bar down to 3.2 bar the average daily Water consumption decreased from 2,908 m3 to 2,465 m3. Savings of 443,000 Liters per day!
It allows not just to direct and allocate these water savings to areas with water scarcity, it also reduces energy cost of pumping the water.
Just reduce the leaks! This is the rationale behind leak reduction technologies, where pressure management is the most efficient and easy to implement. Surely easier than finding new water sources like: dams, river sharing, rainwater harvesting or desalination (:
